SER starts manufacturing PPE at Kharagur workshop

Ankur Bhattacharya ; Kolkata , 17 April : In a major and unprecedented intuitive to intensify its continued fight against COVID-19 pandemic and protect all Railway doctors, nurses and other Medical staff from the disease, the Kolkata headquartered South Eastern Railway (SER) has come forward for the first time in its long history to manufacture Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit in a mass scale at one of its workshop at Kharagpur in West Mindapore district, about 140 km from here.


Informing this SER sources told here today that these protective kits comprising face cover, eye shield, NS-95 Mask, overall gown with hood, shoe cover and gloves were designed in house by the Railway engineers and technicians of different zones.


Initially 30,000 such kits would be produced and on the basis of their utilisation and demand more such PPE would be produced at Kharagpur and may be in some other wrokshops too, the sources informed further.
They said since the launch of the production yesterday, about 300 such PPEs were prepared after their manufacturing process was approved by the Quality Assurance Plan.


The entire production would now be sent to all five railway hospitals under South-Eastern Railway including the Central Hospital at -Garden Reach,and all four Divisional Railway Hospitals at Chakradharpur, Kharagpur, Adra and at Hatia .


Before launching the production, as per the WHO guidelines the entire workplace was cleaned and and sanitised. All workmen were also screened and tested for any symptoms of COVID-19 and strict Social distancing were being maintained in workplace and all were using hand sanitizer at frequently., the sources informed.


SER has put its all out efforts to produce high quality PPE Kit which is equivalent to the best available PPE Kit in India. Railway technicians have been motivated on making these PPE Kits to deal with this health crisis in the wake of COVID-19., they stated further.
