Mecheda (East Midnapore) / Kolkata: Bringing smile and joy to thousands of flower merchants in West Bengal in the middle of a statewide locked down condition,Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has provided a huge relief to them by allowing these hapless merchants to sale their perishable products in some selected wholesale markets from Wednesday.
As soon as the the Chief minister announced her decision last night to provide them some relief in terms of resuming their daily business in wholesale markets, hundreds of flower merchants from different districts of South Bengal including those from East Midnapre, Hooghly, Howrah and East Burdwan districts rushed to the city’s wholesale markets with their goods and started selling them to equally eager individual and wholesale buyers.
‘We thank the Chief minister from the core of our hearts for understanding out difficulties at the time of this national crisis and allowed us to resume our business in limited scale’,said Balaram Das,one of the leading flower merchants who has come from Mecheda like several others to sale different kinds of seasonal flowers by hiring small trucks from their hometown, about 120 km away.
Referring to their ‘tremendous difficulties’ during the past two weeks when most of the merchants had also been facing financial bankruptcy,Das said ‘we could not do anything but only watch that most of the flowers in the field were being dried up or fell on the ground because they were not plucked on time.
Had not Didi (the Chief minister) intervened and allowed us to resume business, though in smaller scale, many of us would have to take our own lives in distress’,he stated further but hoped to revive his condition soon from now on.
About the very limited number of buyers in the city’s main flower wholesale market near Howrah bridge, Das and several other merchants hoped that the situation would normalise soon when the demand for flowers would also pick up substantially.
Moreover, as the Bengali marriage season was on the door step later this month,we are confident that the demand would certainly pick up manifold’ they said in unison looking for a brighter future.
