The story follows the life of noted British paleontologist Anning (Kate Winslet) who begins a relationship with Frances Bell, her nursemaid (Saoirse Ronan). The independent historical drama “Ammonite,” a story inspired by the life of fossil hunter Mary Anning. The story is set in 1840s England, an infamous fossil hunter and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.
The film is set to be written and directed by Francis Lee, who made a splash last year with his debut God’s Own Country, another romance which follows a young sheep farmer in Yorkshire (Josh O’Connor) whose life is transformed by a Romanian migrant worker (Alec Secăreanu). Titanic star Kate was seen on the Dorset set of the upcoming lesbian romance, getting into character in the picturesque seaside town of Lyme Regis, while Saorise stepped out in a Victorian dress to film scenes.
In December 2018, it was announced Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan had joined the cast of the film, with Francis Lee directing the screenplay he wrote. Iain Canning, Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly and Emile Sherman serve as producers with See-Saw Films, BBC Films and the British Film Institute. In March 2019, Fiona Shaw announced her role in the film.
